The first activity when the school reopened after the summer vacations was participation in the Van Mahotsav. This is a week-long drive to plant trees so as to increase forest cover. It is held every year in the month of July throughout the country. The Van Mahotsav was initiated by Mr. K.M. Munshi, a former freedom fighter, politician, and environmentalist, in 1950, when he was the Union Minister of Agriculture and Food. His aim was to increase the area under forest cover by planting more trees.
The IPEM International School celebrated Van Mahotsav from the July 15 to 17, 2009, and the students helped to promote nature conservation and awareness by planting trees to save our environment. The Van Mahotsav program began with the ceremonial plantation of saplings by Dr. S.D. Liddle, Director and Principal of the IPEM International School. Thereafter, the students participated in various activities that included the presentation of a short program on the importance of Van Mahotsav. The program comprised speeches delivered in English and Hindi and the making of posters, charts, and collages on this topic. The program concluded with the presentation of a short skit on “saving our trees,” performed by the students. Dr. S.D. Liddle, praised the students for their efforts.
